Modalities

Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing

Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing (EMDR) is a well researched modality method that has been proven to help people recover from trauma and other distressing life experiences. EMDR uses the brain’s innate healing processes to help individuals move through maladaptively stored memories and traumatic experiences without having to divulge the potentially painful details of the event itself.
EMDRIA, the EMDR International Association has a great way to describe this process: “Our brains have a natural way to recover from traumatic memories and events. This process involves communication between the amygdala (the alarm signal for stressful events), the hippocampus (which assists with learning, including memories about safety and danger), and the prefrontal cortex (which analyzes and controls behavior and emotion). While many times traumatic experiences can be managed and resolved spontaneously, they may not be processed without help. Stress responses are part of our natural fight, flight, or freeze instincts. When distress from a disturbing event remains, the upsetting images, thoughts, and emotions may create feelings of overwhelm, of being back in that moment, or of being ‘frozen in time.’ EMDR therapy helps the brain process these memories and allows normal healing to resume. The experience is still remembered, but the fight, flight, or freeze response from the original event is resolved.”

EMDR can be helpful for those navigating Anxiety, Depression, Grief and Loss, PTSD, Trauma and other stressor related issues.

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy

It’s in the name! Cognitive Behavioral Therapy looks at how our thoughts influence our behaviors which in turn, influence the way we interact with our world. When using CBT we will be examining core thought patterns and working on restructuring those patterns so that you can experience life from a new lens.

Dialectical Behavioral Therapy

As the name suggests, Dialectical Behavioral Therapy allows us to hold two or more things that may seem in opposition at the same time. For example, one can accept themselves truly as they are and also be working on improving themselves. DBT has 4 key tenets: Mindfulness, Interpersonal Effectiveness, Distress Tolerance, and Emotion Regulation. When using DBT we will be actively strengthening your skill levels in those 4 areas.

Acceptance Commitment Therapy

Acceptance Commitment Therapy is a modality that helps an individual embrace their thoughts, feelings and actions via a self-compassion lens rather than avoiding the discomfort. Created by Stephen Hayes in 1986 ACT helps with psychological flexibility via six core processes: Acceptance, Cognitive Diffusion, Being Present, Self as Context, Values, and Committed Action. ACT is frequently paired with mindfulness based interventions including meditation, breathing exercises, and awareness.

EFIT Level 1 (Emotionally Focused Individual Therapy)

Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT) was created by Dr. Sue Johnson and is rooted in attachment science. EFIT is the individual version of EFT and helps people through their unique experiences by honoring the relational components of emotion. It uses regulation, validation, resourcing and corrective experiences to help individuals heal their attachment wounds.
